Technology

Laser Marking

Fiber Laser Marking Machines

Which materials suit a fiber laser?
Stainless steel, aluminium, brass, copper, titanium, coated metals and many plastics such as ABS, PA and PC. Clear glass, wood and plain paperboard are better served by CO2 or UV sources.
What is the difference between Q-switched and MOPA?
A Q-switched source has a fixed pulse width and suits most engraving and coding work. A MOPA source lets you tune pulse width and frequency, giving finer control over heat input for black anodised marks, colour marks and delicate plastics.
Does a fiber laser need consumables?
No inks or solvents. Running costs are electricity, periodic lens cleaning and fume-filter replacement.

UV Laser Marking Machines

Why choose UV over fiber for plastics?
UV marks many plastics without additives and without melting the surface. Fiber often needs laser-sensitive additives to mark light-coloured polyolefins with good contrast.
Can UV lasers mark flexible packaging film?
Yes. UV changes the colour of suitable ink or film layers without perforating the web, which protects the barrier properties of the pack.
How much power do I need?
3–5 W covers most static and moderate-speed coding. 10–15 W is used for high-speed film and extrusion lines or for larger marks.

CO2 Laser Marking Machines

Which wavelength should I use on PET bottles?
9.3 µm is the standard choice. It creates a shallow, frosted mark with good contrast and far less risk of thinning the bottle wall than 10.6 µm.
Can CO2 lasers mark bare metal?
Not effectively. Bare metals reflect CO2 wavelengths; use a fiber laser. CO2 does work on painted or anodised metal by removing the coating.
How long does a CO2 tube last?
Sealed RF tubes typically run for tens of thousands of hours before a regas is needed. Service interval depends on duty cycle and cooling.
Technology

Inkjet & Thermal Coding

Continuous Inkjet (CIJ) Printers

How many lines can a CIJ printer print?
Typically one to five lines depending on model and character height. More lines reduce maximum line speed because each character needs more drops.
What maintenance does CIJ need?
Top up ink and make-up from sealed cartridges, keep the printhead clean, and change filters at the service interval — usually once a year on modern machines.
Can CIJ print on dark surfaces?
Yes, with pigmented white, yellow or silver inks. Pigmented models use an agitated ink system to stop the pigment settling.

Thermal Inkjet (TIJ) Printers

Is TIJ suitable for non-porous materials?
Yes, with solvent-based or UV-curable cartridges. Throw distance is short, so the surface must pass close to the printhead and be reasonably flat.
When is TIJ a better fit than CIJ?
When you need high-resolution codes, a clean environment and near-zero maintenance, and the product has a flat face that can run close to the head.
How long does a cartridge last?
It depends on the message. A simple two-line date code can yield several hundred thousand prints from one 42 ml cartridge.

Thermal Transfer Overprinters (TTO)

Wax, wax-resin or resin ribbon?
Wax-resin is the usual choice for flexible packaging film. Full resin gives the best heat and chemical resistance; wax suits paper labels.
Can a TTO replace a hot-stamp coder?
Yes. It removes metal type changes, prints real-time data and handles barcodes, which hot stamp cannot.
Intermittent or continuous?
Match the film motion at the mounting point. Many models switch between both modes in software.

Case Coding Printers

Can inkjet-printed barcodes meet retailer requirements?
On good-quality corrugated, high-resolution piezo printing produces scannable ITF-14 and GS1-128 codes. Verify grade on your actual board during trials.
Direct print or print-and-apply labels?
Direct print has the lowest cost per case. Labels are preferred for glossy or shrink-wrapped packs and where a guaranteed barcode grade is needed.
What about recycled or dark board?
Darker liners reduce contrast. Trials will show whether a larger X-dimension, a UV ink or a label is the better route.

Labelling & Vision

Label Printers & Print-and-Apply Systems

Direct thermal or thermal transfer?
Direct thermal needs no ribbon and suits short-life logistics labels. Thermal transfer gives durable, long-life print and works on synthetic labels.
What does a pallet label need to contain?
A GS1 logistics label carries the SSCC in both human-readable form and a GS1-128 barcode, usually on two adjacent sides of the pallet.
Can one applicator handle different case sizes?
Yes. Stroke-sensing tamp applicators adapt to height automatically within their stroke range.

Labeling Machines

How accurate is label placement?
Typically within ±1 mm on stable containers. Accuracy depends on container consistency, label quality and line speed.
Can one machine run round and flat bottles?
Front-and-back labellers with a wrap station can handle both; changeover involves guide and belt adjustments.
What is needed for shrink sleeves?
A sleeve applicator cuts and drops the sleeve, and a steam or electric tunnel shrinks it to the container contour.

Vision & Code Inspection Systems

What is the difference between reading and verifying?
Reading confirms the code decodes. Verifying measures quality against an ISO standard and returns a grade, which predicts how reliably other scanners will read it.
Can it check inkjet date codes?
Yes. OCR tools trained on dot-matrix fonts read CIJ codes; consistent print position and contrast improve read rates.
Does it connect to the printer?
Yes. The system can receive the expected data from the coder or line software so every job change updates the inspection automatically.
Technology

Primary Packaging

Filling & Capping Machines

Which filler suits viscous products?
A piston or servo-pump filler. Products such as sauces, creams and gels need positive displacement and often a heated or agitated hopper.
How is fill accuracy expressed?
As a percentage of target volume or weight, typically ±0.5–1% for piston filling under stable conditions.
Can filling and capping be combined?
Yes. A monoblock mounts filling, plugging and capping on one frame, saving floor space on small-container lines.

Pouch & Form-Fill-Seal Machines

VFFS or premade pouch?
VFFS has the lowest pack cost and highest speed from rollstock. Premade-pouch machines handle premium formats — stand-up, zipper, spout — with quicker changeovers.
Which coder fits a form-fill-seal machine?
A thermal transfer overprinter is standard on film. Laser is used with laser-reactive patches or where ribbon-free operation is wanted.
What decides the speed?
Product flow, bag length and seal dwell time. Dosing is usually the bottleneck for powders and sticky products.

Sealing & Vacuum Packaging Machines

What is MAP?
Modified atmosphere packaging replaces air in the pack with a gas mix — commonly nitrogen and carbon dioxide — to slow spoilage.
Which films can a band sealer handle?
Most heat-sealable laminates and polyethylene bags. Temperature, speed and pressure are set for the film structure and thickness.
Single or double chamber?
A double-chamber machine lets the operator load one side while the other cycles, roughly doubling output for the same pump.

Shrink Packaging Machines

POF, PE or PVC film?
Polyolefin (POF) is clear, strong and food-safe — the default for retail. PE is thicker and used for bundling. PVC is declining because of fume and recycling concerns.
L-sealer or side-sealer?
An L-sealer suits low to medium speeds and limited pack lengths. A continuous side-sealer runs faster and has no limit on pack length.
Why do packs show “dog ears”?
Usually too much film at the corners or uneven tunnel airflow. Reducing bag size and adding vent perforations helps.

Blow Moulding Machines

Which process suits which bottle?
Extrusion blow for HDPE/PP bottles with handles and jerrycans; stretch blow for PET beverage and personal-care bottles; injection blow for small pharma and cosmetic containers.
How are blown bottles coded?
UV or CO2 laser coders mark directly on the bottle after moulding, or CIJ prints on the shoulder or base.
What utilities are needed?
Electrical power, chilled water for the moulds and compressed air — high-pressure air, up to 40 bar, for PET stretch blow.
Technology

End-of-Line

Carton Sealers & Case Erectors

Uniform or random case sealer?
Choose uniform for batch production of one size at a time. Choose random where mixed sizes arrive in any order, as in e-commerce fulfilment.
Tape or hot melt?
Tape is simple and flexible. Hot melt costs less per case at high volume and gives a tamper-evident, recyclable closure.
Side-belt or top-and-bottom drive?
Side belts suit most stable cases. Top-and-bottom belts grip tall, narrow or heavy cases more securely.

Strapping & Pallet Wrapping Machines

PP or PET strap?
PP is economical for light and medium cartons. PET holds tension longer and replaces steel for heavy or rigid loads.
Turntable or rotary arm?
Turntables are simple and cost-effective for stable loads. Rotary arms wrap very heavy, light or unstable loads because the pallet does not turn.
How much film does pre-stretch save?
Powered pre-stretch at 250% turns one metre of film into three and a half, often halving film use compared with manual wrapping.

Cartoning, Case Packing & Palletizing

Cobot or industrial robot palletizer?
A cobot cell is compact, quick to redeploy and suits up to roughly 8–10 cases a minute. Industrial robots handle higher speeds, heavier cases and multiple lines.
How long does a format change take?
Tool-less changeovers on modern cartoners and case packers typically take 15–30 minutes with recipe recall.
Where is the pack coded?
Cartons are coded by TIJ or laser at the cartoner discharge; cases by inkjet or label after sealing; pallets by an SSCC labeller after wrapping.
Technology

Automation & Supplies

Conveyors & Line Automation

How do I size a conveyor for a coder?
Allow a straight, vibration-free section with guides so the product passes the printhead or laser at a constant distance and speed.
What is zero-pressure accumulation?
Roller zones stop individually so cases queue without touching, which protects packs and labels.
Can a cobot run without fencing?
Often, after a risk assessment. Speed, payload, gripper design and the process itself — a laser, for example — decide what safeguarding is required.

Software & Consumables

Do I need software for a single printer?
Not necessarily. It pays back when several coders must carry matching data, or when wrong-code incidents are a concern.
Why use matched consumables?
Ink and ribbon chemistry affects adhesion, drying, nozzle life and printhead wear. Matched supplies are tested for those conditions.
Is fume extraction required for laser coding?
Yes. Laser marking generates particulates and gases that must be captured to protect people, optics and product.
